A 33-year-old Big Lake man with ties to the St. Michael-Albertville area was killed in a three-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 10 Wednesday, Feb. 22, according to a report from the Minnesota State Patrol.
The patrol reports at 7:55 a.m., a vehicle driven by Matthew Daniel Barthel, 33, of Big Lake was southbound on Sherburne County Road 81, at the intersection with U.S. Highway 10 on a green light.
Barthel was struck in the intersection by a vehicle driven by Juan Carlos Garcia Morales, 35, Big Lake, was westbound on Highway 10 when it ran the red light.
The impact of the broadside crash forced Barthel’s vehicle to collide into a vehicle driven by Jeffrey James Mateyka, 47, Becker, which was stopped in the right eastbound lane of Highway 10.
Barthel was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Morales was taken via ambulance to St. Cloud Hospital with injuries that the State Patrol states not believed to be life-threatening.
