Homeroom teachers at St. Michael-Albertville High School are always on the lookout for exceptional eleventh-grade students to recommend for STMA’s Rotary Student of the Month program. Local Rotarians select students each month of the school year who embody their motto of “service above self,” with the focus on students in their junior year so the honor can be included in college applications.
The local Rotary club has chosen to honor Kayla Apelt and Andrew Nietfeld for the month of December, and three students for January: Paige McAloon, Antoria Glass and Jillian Testa.
Kayla Apelt, who is the daughter of Kelly and Brent Apelt, is in involved in her school and community. She has been on the honor roll each year. Kayla is a participant in soccer and choir. In addition to being a leader at her church, she serves a child with special needs by being a patient care attendant. Kayla is preparing to attend a four-year college to pursue nursing.
Andrew Nietfeld, whose parents are Evelyn and Ron Nietfeld, is a strong student who has received multiple academic letters and awards. He is a participant of Core Team, weightlifting, and Aliv. Andrew is part of the football and track teams. He also has a black belt. He would like to attend North Dakota State University to study mechanical engineering or attend St. John Vianney College Seminary.
Paige McAloon, daughter of Jeremy and Kristen McAloon, is very active in her school community. She is involved in Cross Country, Track & Field, NHS, Math League, and Spanish Club. She was recognized as Student of the Year in 2016-2017 and was a participant of the 2018 Cross Country State Champion team. Paige would like to obtain a degree in business management after high school.
Antoria Glass, daughter of Angela Klebe and Tora Glass, participates in cheerleading, Spanish Club, and volunteers through opportunities with her church. She has received the Presidential Academic List Award as well as the Coach’s Choice award. Antoria hopes to attend University of Minnesota Twin Cities, University of Minnesota Duluth, or University of Wisconsin Madison.
Jillian Testa is the daughter of Candi and Jerry Testa. She is an academic award winner and has also achieved Silver and Bronze level awards in Girl Scouts. Jillian participates in BPA, NHS, STMA Travel Soccer, Breakfast Club, Girl Scouts, and Spanish Club. She also serves the STMA community as a volunteer. After graduation, Jillian would like to attend a 4-year university on the east or west coast to study business.
“Rotary is very proud to recognize Kayla and Andrew, and Paige, Antoria and Jillian, as students of the month,” said Tracy Larson, STMA Rotary Club President. “They have demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence and represent the ‘service above self’ ideals of Rotary. We wish them a successful future.”
