“The glycemic index or glycaemic index (GI) is a number associated with a particular type of food that indicates the food’s effect on a person’s blood glucose (also called blood sugar) level.”  Why is that important?  When it comes to health, and weight control, the glycemic index can play a huge role!  When you eat a high glycemic meal, your cells respond by turning on insulin and stimulating an enzyme that ramps up your fat storage system.  Your body can handle high-glycemic food some of the time.  But when you eat such foods daily, you create a chronic state of hyperinsulinism, the first step on the downward path towards diabetes.  Fueling your body with small, low glycemic meals every 2 to 3 hours throughout your day can help!  Click on the charts below for a breakdown of the glycemic index of vegetables, fruits and cereals, breads and pastas:
