Five Years Have Passed Since Historic St. Michael Fire

January 7, 2017 By Mike Schoemer

It’s been five years since a historic fire changed the face of downtown St. Michael.

Simonson Lumber’s old storage site, along with some side buildings on Central Avenue, burned to the ground on the evening of Jan. 7, 2012.

Investigators never determined the cause.

The fire changed the shape of downtown. Near the current Dunn Brothers location, the old Simonson’s was considered by many as an eyesore, long abandoned by the Minnesota company.

The site remains for sale, and is zone commercial.
