Easter Candy in the basket was a tradition from the Easter bunny in my house. I love traditions, but as a personal trainer and nutrition coach who studies nutrigenomics (how food affects our body), I have to believe there are better options than candy full of artificial colors and sugars for my children (and me!!). After doing a little research, I came up with 9 creative alternatives to unhealthy Easter candy this year. Enjoy!
*Mini puzzles
*Egg Chalk potterybarnkids.com
*Craft like knitting needle and yarn, model clay, or felt and a bunny pattern
*Coloring book or printed off coloring pages (water color paint is also great for young children)
*Mini Lego sets shop.lego.com
*Garden seeds (herbs can be started in your windowsill right now!)
*BOOKS: The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter (This is a great option) Amazon.com
*Bath toys
*Easter-themed toothbrush
If you are going to continue the tradition of sweet treats this Easter, look for candy with NO artificial colors or flavors (as studies have shown that synthetic chemicals affect children’s brains negatively). Some great brand options are:
- Surf Sweets
- Yummyearth
- Necco
- Rowntrees
- UnREAL Candy
I have small children (hence my alternative choices), but I would love to hear alternatives for your older children as well!
