From “old-time” photos to a beer canned by friends in nearby Big Lake, Albertville’s 100-year celebration has gone from a “Saturday in the park” to a bit of a birthday bash.
City organizers were planning on doing something for the community’s 100th birthday. Now, the day will feature a string of events and a commemorative 4-pak of beer on sale now called the Albertville Centennial, on sale at liquor stores today and throughout this celebration.
“It’s a celebration of the community, the people, both past and present,” said contributor/organizer Samara Postuma. “The support the city has received from so many different organizations has been great. There will be something for everyone, that is for sure.”
The event will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 and run until dusk. Fireworks will wind down the event, with the first “shot” expected to be launched around 8 p.m.
Until then, Central Park and the Lions Pavillion will be rolling, as well as the new train station. Highlights include horse and wagon rides, a penny carnival – yes, PENNIES needed – and an antique car and tractor show along Main Avenue.

Community groups who are pitching in include STMA Moms, the STMA Women of Today, The Foxtailers Snowmobile Club, STMA Rotary and of course, the Albertville Lions. Albertville Royalty will be on hand, of course. And many others (you can catch them all in the poster below).
“There’s literally no way the city could have done this alone, so the community groups really came through,” Postuma said.
Hungry? There will be food trucks on site. And you can wash it all down with free rootbeer. The Lions Beer Wagon will be on-site, too, if you’re looking for an adult beverage.
Music will be at the train depot. Featured acts include the STMA High School Music Department, the Minnetonka Clippers and the Robbinsdale City Band. Square dancing will happen from 2 to 4 p.m. And the Seldom Herd Bluegrass Band – a familiar group for those who partake in local events – will close it down from 6 to 8 p.m.
Wondering about the weather? While there is a pretty good chance of rain in the morning – the day won’t be a washout. So grab an umbrella and come celebrate the century with Albertville on Saturday.
