Interstate 94 Will Close this Weekend if Weather Holds

January 18, 2017 By Mike Schoemer

After a couple of weather delays, crews might be finally ready to take down a bridge over Interstate 94 that’s been on the demolition block for more than a month.

The state will close Interstate 94 in both directions as a result of the former 101st Avenue bridge removal. The freeway will be shut down between the new Minnesota Highway 610 interchange and the Interstate 494/694 split, or the so-called “Fish Lake” interchange, for the entire weekend.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, lane restrictions may begin around 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20 for demolition crews can begin setup. Around 10 p.m. Friday evening, I-94 is scheduled to close to through traffic between I-494 and Highway 610 in each direction.

The roadway is anticipated to reopen to traffic by 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23.

The following detours are recommended by MnDOT during the closure:

  • Westbound I-94 – Detour north on Highway 169 and then west on new Highway 610
  • Eastbound I-94: Detour east on new Highway 610 and then south on Highway 169
Through traffic will not be permitted at all, MnDOT officials stated. However, some local traffic on westbound I-94 will be able to exit at I-494, Hemlock Lane, Weaver Lake Road, and Maple Grove Parkway. Travelers will be unable to travel from Maple Grove Parkway to westbound I-94 due to the closure.

The 101st Avenue bridge is being removed as part of the Highway 610 project.
