The 9th annual Chad Smith Ride for Life takes place this Saturday, rain or shine.
The Chad Smith Ride for Life began in 2008. Chad was able to be a part of the first two Ride For Life events. A former rider, Hodgkins was taking its toll on Smith by the time the 2009 ride rolled around. He knew the event, which had helped him cover medical expenses and other necessities, could do something great for someone else in need.
“One of Chad’s final wishes was that the event move forward and reach out and find a local family that was also fighting cancer,” said cousin and friend Tobey Berning, joined by his wife, Jen. “It was just his way of passing it on.”
This year the 140 mile ride will support two local families- Kathy Cullinan, a local wife, mom and grandmother fighting ovarian cancer and Tucker Helstrom, a 9 year old boy fighting Osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. You can learn more about Tucker on his Caringbridge page.
The ride begins and ends at Ditto’s in St. Michael and even those who don’t ride are welcome to join the fundraisers either on the bus or after the ride [approx. 5 p.m.] for food, entertainment and a silent auction.
All money raised will go directly to the Cullinan and Helstrom families.
