A scary situation unfolded on Buffalo Lake in Buffalo last night after a passer-by reported someone going through the ice around 9 p.m.
Buffalo Police Department, the Wright County Sheriff’s Office and Buffalo Fire and Rescue responded to the scene within minutes Thursday, March 10 and used state-of-the-art equipment to conduct a search on the very thin ice conditions.
It was later discovered the man who was seen fishing near the shore did break through, but got himself to safety. His wife informed the authorities.
However, BPD and Buffalo Fire and Rescue used the opportunity to remind anglers ice is too thin on area lakes for any further fishing.
They summed up the operation with this post:
“A little after 9:00 PM tonight, WCSO, BFD, and BPD were called to the north end of Buffalo Lake by a passerby. The caller reported seeing a flashlight on the ice about 50 yards out and thought somebody may have gone through the ice. The Buffalo Fire Department arrived with their ice rescue equipment and WCSO was on standby with their airboat. BFD confirmed there were two holes in the ice near the flashlight. We were later approached by a female who stated it was her husband that went through the ice shortly before we were dispatched, and he was now back at home and not injured. Hats off to BFD for a great job tonight! Please remember to stay off the area lakes as they are not safe!! ”
