Heroes who rushed in on Sept. 11, 2001, climbed hundreds of stairs, up to 2,000, to rescue those stranded in the offices of the Twin Towers on that fateful day.
As a testament to their bravery, hard work and heroism, gyms across America have started a “Step Up” challenge each Sept. 11, including InFit and Anytime Fitness in Albertville, who teamed up with the Albertville Fire Department last Friday for a challenge of their own.
On a balmy September day, dozens of firefighters and athletes put on more than 100 pounds of gear and took to the stairclimber in the InFit parking lot, in the shadow of Albertville’s Ladder 11 truck. From owner Ashley Darkenwald of Anytime to other teachers and volunteers, to members of AFD, the crew raised more than $775 for the department and climbed more than 25,000 steps, enough to go up and down the towers six times.
The inspirational day included some music, camaraderie and family participation for the cause.
Funds raised will be donated to the Albertville Fire Department.
