For Candice and Brian Edlund, taking on Goin’ Postal was an unexpected adventure. The couple took on the packing in shipping franchise in 2011 after the former owners – Lynn and Lee Vanderbroeke – headed south for warmer climates.
Friday, Feb. 27, that adventure is coming to a close here in Albertville, as the couple decided to a call it quits earlier this month.
Candice said Friday the move is a business decision, reinforced by some personal decisions. She’s wrapping up her schooling and is hoping to become a psychologist or counselor after receiving her degree.
“We just can’t thank the community enough for their support and all of the business they’ve done with us over the last three years,” she said. “We wish Albertville nothing but the best. It really has been good.”
The business has struggled with modern conveniences. This year’s Christmas rush was much slower, staff said, than in past years. In contrast, Amazon has seen a surge in Christmas shoppers and shipping. That means people are direct-shipping gifts complete with a bow and wrapping. Lines that were once near the back of the store were much shorter this past December.
Increased competition with computer repair – Brian’s specialty – has also cut into a slice of the business.
Over the past couple of years, the Edlunds had teamed up with Knight Armour to become a hub for St. Michael-Albertville spirit wear, as well. While that provided a bump in traffic, it wasn’t enough to keep the doors open.
Owner Lori Haakenson said she’s working with Techmate, a new computer center in St. Michael (next to Distractions) for retail space and will be opening there soon.
Goin’ Postal will be open until 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27 for those who have last minute needs or just want to stop in and bid the staff “good luck.”
