St. Michael-Albertville High School will visit one of the most popular “pop” musicals of the 20th Century as it presents “Bye Bye Birdie” as the Fall Musical for the 2014-2015 school year.
Shows begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, with shows also at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. There is a 2 p.m. matinee set for Sunday. All shows are held at the St. Michael-Albertville High School Performing Arts Center.
Tickets are just $8, and can be ordered via the school district’s website, just click on the ‘Activities’ tab and select ‘Fall Musical.’
This year’s musical is directed by Josh Mann.
Based, loosely, on the phenomenal events surrounding popular singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army in 1957, the rock star character’s name, “Conrad Birdie,” is word play on the name of Conway Twitty, who was one of Presley’s radio rivals.
The story, of course, involves a group of teens and the small community of Sweet Apple, Ohio. Conrad Birdie has been drafted, and he’s chosen a teen from Sweet Apple – or rather, his agent has – to reward with his “Last Kiss.”
His arrival, and the impact on Sweet Apple, and Kim McAfee, is the stuff of legend.
