Thursday Thoughts from Coach Jill
“The glycemic index or glycaemic index (GI) is a number associated with a particular type of food that indicates the food’s effect on a person’s blood glucose (also called blood sugar) level.” Why is that important? When it comes to health, and weight control, the glycemic index can play a huge role! When you eat a high glycemic meal, your cells respond by turning on insulin and stimulating an enzyme that ramps up your fat storage system. Your body can handle high-glycemic food some of the time. But when you eat such foods daily, you create a chronic state of hyperinsulinism, the first step on the downward path towards diabetes. Fueling your body with small, low glycemic meals every 2 to 3 hours throughout your day can help! Click on the charts below for a breakdown of the glycemic index of vegetables, fruits and cereals, breads and pastas:
