The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has updated its “Fall Colors” map of the state, and things are shaping up nicely for fans of foliage.
Fall colors are peaking – not in Wright County – but around the area. Parks near St. Cloud, Milaca and farther north in the Grand Rapids and Brainerd Lakes Area are all showing close to peak or peak colors, with this year’s breakout looking as good as ever.
The DNR breaks down state parks, too, with which trees to look for and which colors are “popping” the most. Right now, maples are starting to burst with red, while birch and aspen are showing golds and yellows.
There’s still time, but this weekend looks to be a perfect pair of days for heading out and doing some “sight seeing” if you’re a fan of fall. The temperatures are supposed to remain mild – in the upper-70s on both days in the north areas, or even cracking that 80-degree mark if you’re heading southward this weekend.
Mike’s pick: Lake Carlos State Park near Alexandria is fantastic, and if some rain showers pass through, hit Carlos Creek Winery for a glass of Table Red. You can thank me later. Closer to home, Deer Lake Orchard is a gem, south of Buffalo. There’s live music every weekend, and the Honey Crisp apples are almost ready to pick.
