The STMA United Soccer Club kicked off it’s opening week of games last week with great results for multiple teams. This summer STMA United boasts 30 traveling teams from ages 8-17. Highlights from week 2 of the 2014 Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) season are below.
U8 Girls Gold -Strait:The STMA U8 Thunder girls had their first league game on Tuesday. It was a new experience for these girls as they got to travel down to Fort Snelling to play. The girls were excited to use the knowledge gained from their Northwest Kickers tournament the weekend before…and did an awesome job keeping up with the MU team that they played. The game ended in a 1-1 tie. Way to go Girls!
U9 Boys Maroon – Durruty: The u9 boys team played their 2nd league game of the season against a tough group from Westonka. Both teams came out to play and ended up at a 4-4 tie. Jack B. had three goals during the game, while Tyler J. netted one as well. Matthew L, Tyler J and Nathan S each recorded assists during the game. Nathan S. was also made 5 saves while playing goalie. Great Job Boys!
U9 Girls Maroon – Dorland: Busy week for the team as the girls finally got to play their first league game against North Metro and also represent the club at Albertville “Exlpore your parks night.” It was a hard fought game against a very good opponent which ended in a 1-1 tie thanks to a late goal by Hannah K. The girls played a good defensive game and also had other scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize. The goalkeepers played great with Ashlyn M. and Mackenzie B. each making numerous saves. Good job girls!
U10 Girls Maroon – Sustacek: The U-10 STMA Maroon girls’ team continued the season with a 4-0 win in their second game. This game was marked by strong defensive play from STMA which limited the scoring attempts from the opponent. Eleanor T-W set the tone early in the game by scoring on a long distance shot that she placed in the upper corner of the goal. In the second half, Jenna J scored 3 goals to solidify the win. Assisting on those goals with nice passes were Brooke B, Casey F, and Raelin S. The goalkeepers in this game played great with Jenna J and Briel G combining for the shutout. Way to go girls!
U10 Girls Gold – Williams: The team played extremely well in their 2nd league game of the season vs Minneapolis United, only to come up short 2-1. STMA had 28 attempts on the net but just couldn’t seem to make it past the MU goalie. Brooklyn D had the loan goal for the team while Ashlyn H made 6 saves. Brooklyn D was awarded player of the game for her performance while Allie W took home player of the week honors for her work at practice. The team also represented the club at Albertville “Exlpore your parks night”, scrimmaging against the u9 boys and then taking on their parents in a fun filled game.
U11 Girls C1 – Jenniges: The team competed in the Shakopee Cup this past weekend and had a terrific outing playing in a mixed U11/U12 pool. They tied their first game 1-1 versus Shakopee’s U11 team. In the second game they went against a 12 year old team from Chaska and won 2-0. The third game of the tournament saw the team take on a Burnsville U12 team and win 7-0, sending them to the Championship game on Sunday afternoon — facing Shakopee once again.
After being down 0-1 at the half, the girls came back and tied the game sending it to overtime. They had a couple of great missed opportunities in the overtime periods, but still ended the game in a tie and went to a shootout. Unfortunately for STMA, the team lost by one goal in the shootout. The girls had a fantastic time and really enjoyed the battles against a great, evenly matched Shakopee team.
U11 Girls C2 – Nickel: The U11 C2 Lady Knights, coached by Dan Nickel & Jeremy VanKuyk, played in their first tournament of the year in Shakopee this past weekend. Joining the C2 team for the tournament were three guest players from the STMA United C3 team, Mackenzie D, Adalyn P, and Grace S. The Lady Knights played teams from Shakopee, Chaska, & Woodbury during the preliminary round. The girls played extremely well by scoring a total of 18 goals while only allowing 6. One game was a shut out with a score of 10-0!
The Lady Knights finished the preliminary round undefeated advancing to the championship game on Sunday to face a tough Minnetonka team. Unfortunately for STMA, the game ended with a score of 2-1 in favor of Minnetonka. The girls had a great tournament and were the only team to score against the Tonka team the entire tournament! Great job Lady Knights on your 2nd place finish in Shakopee.
U12 Boys C2 – Lindstrom: The boys suffered their first loss of the season against Central Minnesota S.C. on cold and windy night. Brady B & Braden S each scored a goal for STMA during the 4-2 loss. The defeat drops the team to 2-1 in league play and 2-1-2 overall on the year. They are looking forward to bouncing back this week however as they take on a team from the Minnesota Thunder Academy.
U13 Girls C3 – Durruty: The u13 c3 girls coached by Franciso Durruty played their first two league games of the season against Delano and Orono. On Tuesday, Mailia C scored the loan goal in the match-up vs Delano as the game ended in a 1-1 draw. The Team would come right back two nights later against Orono, falling 3-1. Isabel B scored STMA’s loan goal on Thursday, while Malia C added the assist. Goalie Kiera B faced a ton of shots during Thursday’s game but managed to save 20 of the 23 she faced. Well played girls.
U14 Boys C2 – Canton: The u14 boys, coached by Ryan Canton, played in the U13/U14 C1/C2 bracket of the Coon Rapids Tournament this past weekend. When all was said and done the team scored 18 total goals spread across 6 different players while only allowing 4 goals. The team made it to the championship game and faced a Golden Valley squad that beat them in a tournament last summer (4-0) without much trouble. The entire team played a tremendous game and rose to the occasion. A full game and overtime was not enough to determine the victor as it was still knotted at 1 goal apiece, so they would have to determine the champion with kicks from the mark. Though STMA played incredibly well, the shootout would be their downfall, 3-2. The effort by the boys all weekend long was good enough to take home 2nd place. Great Job.
U15 Boys C2 – Baldwin: The u15 boys looked to continue their fantastic early season play by taking on a team from Maplebrook. The game was easily handled by STMA as they would win 6-1 driving their season league record to 2-0, and their overall record to 6-0. Highlights from the game included Franco R dancing through the Maplebrook midfield and unleashing a shot from 35+ yards out which managed to find the net. Tanner Son netted one of his own from 20 yards out and would later add on two more for STMA. Jake M and Isaiah S would each net a goal as well to round out the game for the u15’s. They will look to continue their unbeaten play this week against Edina.
