A major step in Interstate 94’s reconstruction and rehabilitation in Monticello arrives Friday, just in time for the Minnesota holiday known as “Fishing Opener.”
Motorists in Monticello will encounter major delays as the ramps from both directions of Highway 25 to eastbound I-94 close beginning overnight Friday, May 9. Both of those ramps are on the south side of the bridge over the interstate.
A signed detour will direct motorists along Chelsea Road, to County Road 18 and then to eastbound I-94.
The ramps from Highway 25 to eastbound I-94 will open by mid-September.
Also beginning overnight May 9, motorists traveling eastbound I-94 will encounter narrow lanes and a speed limit reduction to 55 mph as crews shift traffic to temporary lanes along eastbound I-94.
The traffic changes are needed as crews prepare to switch all lanes of I-94 to the eastbound lanes of I-94 later this month.
The changes are part of the I-94 reconstruction project in Monticello.

The project will reconstruct I-94 through much of Monticello, add an auxiliary lane to westbound I-94 between County Road 18 and Highway 25, reconfigure the ramps from Highway 25 to eastbound I-94 and upgrade signal systems and other infrastructure while lanes are closed for construction. When complete later this year, motorist will see improved traffic flow, safety, drainage and a smoother ride along three miles of busy interstate.
