A veterinarian in Elk River has confirmed a farm in Wright County has discovered horses within its stables ill with the Equine Herpes Virus (EHV), which is a viral infection that can cause respiratory disease, abortions in mares, and neurologic dysfunction.
Unfortunately, there is no vaccine for the neurologic form. According to the clinic, Anoka Equine Veterinary Services, pregnant mares should receive the killed vaccine (Pneumabort) at 5, 7 and 9 months of gestation.
TheHorse.com reports the farm, which is identified in statement on the Anoka Equine Veterinary Services Facebook site, is cooperating with officials and has tested all horses on the property.
Highly contagious among horses, EHV-1 primarily causes rhinopneumonitis (a respiratory disease usually found in young horses).
