Monticello High School Shocked by Death of Senior Student

Ian Rogers, a member of the Class of 2020, was killed Wednesday while riding his bike.

August 23, 2019 By Mike Schoemer

The Monticello School District and Monticello High School community is reeling after a bike versus vehicle accident Wednesday, Aug. 21 left an incoming senior student dead.

Ian Rogers, 17, would have been a member of the Class of 2020. He was struck while riding his bicycle on Highway 25 south of the community and died.

The accident happened just before 10 p.m. Wednesday. Rogers was biking northbound in the left lane of traffic when a 2013 Dodge Avenger driven by a 25-year-old woman from St. Cloud who was also northbound on Highway 25  hit him. The accident happened near Kjellberg Court in Monticello.

The car’s driver was not hurt. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

ISD 882 released a statement Thursday stating

“Ian will be remembered fondly as a kind-hearted, loving friend that built strong connections and deep relationships with peers and staff members across ISD 882. The district will be extending full support to any students that are grieving the loss of Ian.”

Any student that would like someone to talk to is asked to call 763-272-3000, and will be put in contact with a district counselor or social worker, the statement concluded.
