Amazon’s “Prime Day” brought about a ton of potential savings for shoppers, but it also brought another, unwanted result: prime targets for thieves.
An Albertville resident’s alarm company released a public video of an opportunistic felon grabbing a valuable package from the front stoop of his home. The video, below, captures the thief grabbing the box and attempting to stuff it into a backpack. After some shenanigans, the young man simply grabs his bag and the box and disappears into some brush near the home.
Wright County Sheriff’s Office representatives issued an alert during the holidays that “package stealing” from front steps had become a routine problem with the “giving season,” as more and more people continue the online shopping trend.
Now, with special promotions such as Prime Day and other shopping “specials,” Sheriff Joe Hagerty and other investigators from the county warn this will become a year-round issue for homeowners.
Some advice? Make an arrangement to have the package delivered to your place of employment. Or, if you’re on the road when the Amazon “smile” box is set to be delivered, make an arrangement for the package to be dropped off at a neighbor or family member’s home.
Finally, track the package – everyone from eBay to Amazon to US Postal Service will offer this information – and make sure you’re around when the package looks like it’s going to arrive.
Or, install a slick alarm system – like this Albertville resident did – and maybe you can catch your thief in the act.
