With the craft beer market still on the rise and the Otsego and Albertville areas continuing to grow, Coborns is making a move.
Supermarket powerhouse Coborn’s, Inc. is nearing completion on a new liquor store location at the Albertville Crossing, set to open in June 19. The current liquor store, located in Coborn’s grocery store, will be moved to the end unit location in the adjacent strip mall at 5600 LaCentre Ave. Suite 114 in Albertville.
It’s the former location of the daycare site in the strip mall, down from such mainstays as Papa Murphy’s and Hong Thai.
According to Coborn’s spokesman Kevin Hurd, the new location brings with it a brand-new design “to further enhance each guest’s shopping experience.” The store’s interior has a very modern look, a new premium selection area for unique and hard to find items, wide aisles, a new tasting center and plenty of convenient parking. In addition to cosmetic changes, guests will find a larger selection of items for sale. More than 500 liquor, beer and wine products have also been added to the store.
Coborn’s Liquor will be open Monday-Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Once Minnesota’s Sunday liquor sales law takes effect, all Coborn’s Liquor locations in Minnesota will also be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each Sunday, beginning July 2.
In addition to this transition, Coborn’s, Inc. is working on a remodeling project to bring its bold “next-generation” look to the Coborn’s grocery store in Albertville. The remodel will be consistent with Coborn’s Marketplace next-generation stores in Isanti and Sartell. This remodel is expected to be complete by fall 2017.
St. Cloud, Minnesota-based Coborn’s, Inc. is a 95-year-old employee-owned grocery retailer with approximately 8,000 employees and 55 stores across Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin under the Coborn’s, Cash Wise Foods, Marketplace Foods and Save-A-Lot banners. Coborn’s, Inc. also owns CobornsDelivers, an online grocery ordering and home delivery service; and stand-alone convenience, liquor and pharmacy locations. To support its 120 retail locations, Coborn’s, Inc. operates its own central bakery, gluten-free bakery, dry cleaning facility and grocery distribution center.

Albertville is fortunate to have three different liquor stores. Here in Monticello we have one. It’s a municipal liquor store (city-owned). It’s a monopoly business operated by government on top of it. As a Monticello resident, I was disappointed to say the least that our city council recently voted in favor of staying closed on Sundays because they can. There were many comments on social media stating that our community members were not happy and planned to shop elsewhere. I think Coborn’s in Albertville is an excellent alternative choice! It’s only 7 minutes from Monticello and the prices are outstanding compared to ours in town. Easily $2-3 less per bottle for most spirits. Today when I went to Coborn’s Liquor they were in the process of moving to the new location. One of the staff also said they would match any price of another liquor store in Albertville. THIS is what competition in the marketplace does for customers. In Monticello we are trapped with one option and a council that cannot understand why customers would want them open on Sundays. Our neighbors in the City of Big Lake elected to be open on Sundays at their municipal liquor store, also the only one in their town. See Monticello?! It can be done. Customers have the power to speak volumes with their dollars and where they go with them to shop. I urge Monticello residents who are upset with Hi-Way Liquors remaining closed on Sundays to shop elsewhere (ie. Coborn’s Liquor in Albertville) so the bottom line is affected at the Monticello store and council reverses their decision. Who knows? Those customers who go elsewhere may become loyal to Coborn’s in the end! THIS is why you need to be open Sundays here in Monticello because you risk the chance your customers will venture elsewhere on Sundays as well as other days of the week. I can’t wait for the new store in Albertville to open on Monday, June 19th!
