After 35 years of teaching in a classroom of her own, Albertville resident Sherrie Marcy has now turned her time and talents towards volunteering to help even more students. She began volunteering at St. Michael-Albertville’s Fieldstone Elementary eight years ago, when her grandchildren were students at Fieldstone. Though her grandchildren have moved beyond Fieldstone, Marcy never left. Since then she has dedicated an average of 30 hours per week to working with children as a volunteer, pulling them out of class in small groups to focus on reading and math skills.
“Miss Sherrie pours her heart and soul into Fieldstone students,” Principal Jeanette Aanerud said. “She forms multiple reading and math groups, supplying her own materials, and creating teaching tools that she knows will reach the kids.”
Today, Marcy will be recognized for her service to students as WCCO Radio’s Good Neighbor. A segment on her efforts aired earlier this morning and will run again today at 12:40 p.m. and 5:50 p.m. WCCO Radio is on air at AM 830.
“She’s such a great volunteer, it’s unbelievable,” Aanerud said. “And she keeps coming back.”
Aanerud said students love going to see Miss Sherrie and “practically jump from their seats” when their name is called to go.
“The kids absolutely adore her,” added Fieldstone PTO member, Tara LaVigne. “She creates her own lesson plans and is completely self-sufficient.”
