St. Michael recyclers, how many times have you lugged an overflowing 65 gallon recycling bin to the end of your driveway, or rationed the number of bags or cardboard boxes you put in at a time, leaving extra mess in your garage? If you have a larger family like me, this has probably been fairly common practice since the largest recycling cart size St. Michael offered was 65 gallons. Until now, that is.
Last fall, the city signed a new five-year agreement with Advanced Disposal for their recycling services, and the new agreement came with an option for residents to upgrade to a 95 gallon cart size. Residents can do so for free from now until March 31, and after that there will be a $30 fee to exchange carts.
95 gallon carts will incur a $4 monthly recycling fee, compared with $3.50 for 65 gallon carts and $3.00 for 38 gallon carts.
There were some initial delays with the delivery of carts, but city employees said the new carts are now ready to go and the large initial order of 95 gallon carts have been dropped off.
While other cities allow residents to choose their own recycling provider, city employees in charge of the recycling contract said residents are able to save money on recycling costs compared with other cities who don’t have a recycling contract in place. In addition, city engineers have said the single recycler helps reduce the amount of road repairs needed due to heavy trucks coming through.
