It’s been eight years since I lost one of my favorite people to cancer. Eight years since he “earned his wings,” and now celebrates Father’s Day in heaven with my grandmother and grandfather – whom he adored, pestered and, I’m pretty sure, earned “favored in-law” status.
My uncle Daryl lost his fight with cancer that first year of the Chad Smith Ride for Life. So, it’s an event that hits home, every summer. Not because the two were connected, really, in any sense … other than really poor timing.
And that stupid “c” word.
Through the years, I’ve met Wendy, Jen and Tobey and learned more about Chad, for whom the ride is named. I’ve met, in person, beneficiaries and family members like Lisa K (Scott’s wife), Devon (who is a neighbor and my son’s friend), Luke (RIP, #44) and others who have benefitted from this community outpouring in ways far beyond finances. To know a couple hundred bikers have your back is quite the feeling, I’m sure.
My uncle would’ve charmed them all.
Daryl would’ve loved something like the Ride for Life because it’s all about bringing people together. That was his element. Daryl at a party was something you didn’t want to miss, because you never knew what was going to happen next.
He’d love the sense of community. He’d love the patriotism. And, he might have enjoyed a couple of beers.
Rest assured, though – he’d have taken the bus.
So, if you’re looking for something to do this weekend – show your support. Events like this are what make St. Michael-Albertville and the surrounding area so special. We build a community, and it grows through a movement – like wanting to kick cancer’s proverbial butt.
To my friends who start the celebration Friday night and keep it rolling this weekend – be safe, and enjoy the ride. And maybe toss up a prayer to all of those, like Chad and Daryl, who have left us too soon.
Here’s the details:
The kick stands go up this summer for David Becker. David is a wonderful husband, father of 6 children and grandfather to 5+ grandchildren. David was born and raised in the Albertville area. Near the end of 2014, David was diagnosed with Stage 4 Esophageal Cancer. He has to undergo many very expensive treatments that are not covered under his insurance. For David to continue these costly treatments, the family needs our help. Please come out and support this wonderful family in their time of need!!
