STMA United traveling teams performed extremely well at tournaments over the weekend. Highlights from week 4 of the 2014 Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) season are below.
U9 Boys Gold Durruty: The boys picked up their third win of the season with a 7-0 victory in league play. Tyler J had 3 goals in the contest, while Jake K & Daniel E each added 2 of their own. Jack B was solid in goal saving every shot that came his way.
After their league game, the boys then went on to play in the Maplebrook Tournament. Although shortened by the heavy rains over the weekend, the boys managed to pick up another win in their only game of the tournament, 7-0. The team is getting better at passing and communicating and are continuing to play well on the field. Great Job Boys!
U9 Girls Maroon Dorland: The girls started off with a rough loss to Maple Brook.. Although the final score didn’t reflect it, the girls did have many scoring opportunities. The girls bounced back with a 1-0 win over North Suburban on a goal by Zaya E. and great defensive play by all, lead by goalkeepers Tailyn R. and Ella H.
Competing in the Maplebrook tournament, the girls got their revenge with a 3-1 win over the same MapleBrook team they lost to earlier in the week. Zaya E. netted 2 goals and Mackenzie B. added 1. Again the defensive play by the girls was the difference in the game and goalkeepers Hannah K. and Elliot L. played very well. The tournament was cut short by rain, but the team played well.
U10 Girls Gold Williams: The u10 girls team, lead by Matt Williams, played 1 league game this past week, followed by the Maplebrook tournmanet. During league play, the girls took on a tough Eden Prairie team and gave it their best effort before losing 7-2. During the game Cora W had 1 goal on 10 shots on net, while Isabel M scored the 2nd goal. Others also had multiple shots but just couldn’t find the goal.
The girls bounced back though in the Maplebrook tournament, winning their only game 6-2 over TRSA. Brooklyn D & Cora W each had 3 goals in the game while Ashlyn H made 12 saves. The team awarded Ava L, Ashlyn H & Lauren C player(s) of the week honors for their hard work on the field.
U12 Girls C2 Fritz: The u12 C2 girls, lead by coach Chad Fritz, broke through with their first win this year in league play 1-0 against MTC. STMA had a number of chances that went off the crossbar and a number of nice crossing plays. The defense held strong all game long as STMA was able to drive their record to 1-0-2 in league play this season.
In the Maplebrook Tournament STMA beat Park Valley 1-0 in their first game and lost 5-0 against TRSA in the 2nd. The tournament was cut short before the girls had a chance to play their third and final game. Great week girls!
U15 Boys C2 Baldwin: The dominance for the u15 boys team, lead by coach Mike Baldwin, continued this week as they went 4-0. In the first league game of the week, the boys beat WestTonka 7-0. During the game, Tanner Son scored 3 goals, followed by Franco R with 2 and Noah H & Manny A with 1 each. The fantastic midfield play was evident for the team as they controlled the pace of the game and only allowed WestTonka one shot on net.
In the 2nd league game the u15’s took on Waconia. Tanner Son had another strong game with 2 goals and Isaiah S added 1 of his own. Tanner scored his first goal of the game 90 seconds into the contest off of a beautiful cross from Brennen B. The ball was placed so perfectly by Brennen, that Tanner was able to head it into the lower corner of the net. Tanners 2nd goal was a little tougher to come by and didn’t happen until 5 minutes of the 2nd half had gone by. The goal was scored after Isaiah beat the defense and played a great cross into the box. The third goal by Isaiah soon followed off of a corner kick by Franco.
The boys then played in the St. Croix Open tournament and played two of their three games before getting rained out. Game one saw STMA defeat Dakota Rev 4-0, while game 2 saw another win 1-0 vs PSA. Had the tournament not been cut short, the boys would have been in the championship match. Fantastic week for the u15’s as their season record now stands at 10-0-1.
U15 Girls C3 McLachlan: The season keeps rolling along for the u15 girls team lead by Matt McLachlan. The team ran their record to 2-0-1 on the year with two fantastic wins over tough opponents. Game 1 saw the girls beat PSA 5-3 while the 2nd game of the week ended in a 3-2 victory over St. Louis Park. The victories propelled the u15’s into first place in the west district as they head into two more games this week. Great job girls!
U17 Girls C2 Billin: The u17 girls took on the task of playing 3 games this past week. Game 1 was a league contest as STMA took on Eden Prairie. The game was a tight contest to begin with, before EP took control and won 4-1.
Games 2 & 3 on the week would be part of the Maplebrook tournament. Due to Graduations, Lacrosse and Track sectionals the girls started Friday’s game against Monticello with only 9 players. Undaunted by the lack of a full squad, the girls showed a lot of heart and 20 minutes into the game were up 1-0. Reinforcements soon arrived from other events and the team was able to hold off Monticello for the 1-0 win. Saturday’s game saw STMA take on Maplebrook and pull off another close win 2-1. Sunday’s games were cancelled due to weather and since STMA was the only unbeaten team, they were declared the tournament champions. Great job!
