Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, major changes are taking shape on Interstate 94 between the County Road 18 and Highway 25 exits in Monticello.
Motorists traveling through Monticello may encounter delays and slow traffic as the westbound lanes of I-94 between County Road 18 and Highway 25 are shifted to the eastbound side of the road beginning Wednesday, May 21.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation said both directions of I-94 will have narrowed, temporary lanes with a reduced speed limit of 55 mph through Oct. 15.
Also beginning May 21, the ramp from westbound I-94 to Highway 25 will close. Motorists traveling from westbound I-94 to local roads and businesses in Monticello will be directed to exit at County Road 18, about two miles before the closed Highway 25 ramp. The Highway 25 ramp will open in late-July.
Miss that County 18 ramp though, and you’re stuck on the freeway for 12 more miles. The next westbound exit would be at Hasty/Silver Creek.
Other I-94 ramps in Monticello will close as scheduled below:
- Ramp from County Road 18 to westbound I-94 will close through mid-October. A signed detour will direct motorists along local roads, to Highway 25, to westbound I-94.
- The two ramps from Highway 25 to eastbound I-94 will remain closed through mid-September. Motorists may access eastbound I-94 at County Road 18.

The traffic changes are needed as part of a project to reconstruct and improve more than two miles of I-94 in Monticello.
When complete in fall 2014, the project will improve efficiency on the interstate and local transportation systems by adding an auxiliary lane along westbound I-94, reconfiguring ramps from Highway 25 to eastbound I-94, upgrading signal systems and improving drainage.
