Anglers Leave Behind Hundreds of Panfish on Pelican Lake

Figuring the ice would have killed them anyway, ice fishermen on Pelican Lake near St. Michael left behind a field of sunfish and crappies recently.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources opened the lake to “liberalized fishing” recently, fearing winterkill. Measurements of oxygen taken at the lake in early March showed the levels be lethal for most fish, as Pelican continues to freeze solid in areas.
